What Happens When You Don’t Clean Your Carpet Regularly?
Vacuuming your carpets on a regular basis simply isn’t enough to keep them clean. Your carpets need regular deep cleaning, in order to be hygienic. Carpets are a breeding ground for bacteria, dust mites and other microorganisms that can cause or aggravate a variety of health conditions – especially respiratory disorders and allergies. Houses with carpets, especially a large amount, need to bring in professionals to keep it a healthy environment.
Apart from the health hazard that dirty carpets pose, there are a number of other important reasons why you need to clean your carpets.
1. Permanent Marks and Stains
Spills on your carpet lead to unsightly stains and if they are not cleaned immediately, can become permanent. These permanent stains attract more dirt (and microorganisms) and will lead to carpets that look dirty and ugly. Regular carpet cleaning can help remove stubborn stains from deep within the pile of the carpets.
2. Compacted Pile
As dirt and grime collects on your carpets, it causes the fibers to compact together. This gives your carpets a flattened appearance especially in high traffic areas where regular footfalls can contribute to the dirt as well as the compacting of the fibers. Not only is this type of compacting highly unattractive it can also lead to greater wear and tear as the fibers rub together resulting in a carpet that becomes threadbare much faster.
3. Wear and Tear
Dirt and debris will destroy the fibers of your carpets in the long run. The dirt rubs against the fibers causing them to become thin and frail and eventually deteriorate entirely once again resulting in carpets that are threadbare. This can significantly reduce the lifespan of your carpet meaning that it will probably need replacement far sooner than it should.
4. Dirt Attracts Dirt
It is a myth that clean carpets attract dirt and get dirtier quicker. This myth can be attributed to carpet shampoos that are designed to attract and encapsulate dirt in order to draw it out of the carpet fibers. Residue from the shampoo continues to attract dirt long after cleaning which a regular vacuum should pick up and remove. Dirt on the other hand does attract more dirt, especially those wet and sticky food and beverage spills. Spills are also a great food source for bacteria making your carpets even more unhygienic.
Most carpets come with a warranty. The better the quality of the carpet, the longer the warranty. This warranty may however become null and void if the manufacturer’s cleaning and care instructions are not followed carefully. So, if you aren’t cleaning your carpets and they do become damaged, stained or threadbare before their time, you will not be able to have them replaced under warranty.
It is recommended to have your carpets professionally cleaned at least once every year. Any dry or wet spills should be treated immediately to prevent them from attracting more dirt, microorganisms and stains becoming permanent. Carpets should be vacuumed a minimum of once a week – although high traffic areas, busy households or homes with pets can do with even more regular vacuuming.
Take care of your carpets and they will give your many years of warm, comfortable and safe floor coverings.
