3 Awesome Events Happening in the Black Hills This Summer

In the winter when it is cold, Black Hills residents tend to favor indoor activities, such as billiards Rapid City SD. However, it is in the spring and summer when the weather warms up that the Hills really come alive. South Dakotans don’t take nice weather for granted and take full advantage of the warm summer months to put on events such as parades, rodeos, concerts, and festivals. These events are fun for visitors and locals alike. Here are a few Black Hills events that you should check out this summer.

1. Festival in the Park

Festival in the Park is a three-day event that takes place in Spearfish City Park in mid-July. While there is no cost to attend on Saturday and Sunday, there is a $5 admission fee on Friday evening that goes to support the historically restored Matthews Opera House and Arts Center. Hundreds of vendors sell handmade arts and crafts, and attractions also include live music and entertainment. Concessions will be available for sale. Don’t miss one of the upper Midwest’s largest art and music festivals.

2. Days of ’76

The Days of ’76 commemorate the discovery of gold in the Black Hills and the subsequent founding of the town of Deadwood, a legendary mining town. The Days of ’76 is a nearly weeklong event at the end of July featuring an award-winning rodeo and a parade down Deadwood’s Historic Main Street.

3. Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival

The Fall River Hot Air Balloon Festival is a two-day event that takes place at the end of August in the Southern Hills town of Hot Springs. Weather permitting, the balloons will launch from the local airport at approximately 6:00 a.m., so be sure to set your alarm so you don’t miss the awe-inspiring sight of the balloons rising up over the majestic mountains.

While there’s no bad time to visit the Black Hills, events such as these combined with the warm weather make summer the most popular time for tourists.
